Why does the dentist ask if I am taking any medication? Why is it so important for them to know?
It is vital that we know what medication you are currently taking so that we can be sure that any medicines we prescribe or local anaesthetic we use will not interfere with your current medication. It can also explain anything unusual in your mouth, such as a dry mouth, which could result from your medications.

This is why we ask new patients to complete our personal dental assessment, and we ask all patients to keep us informed of any changes in their general health, medical conditions and medication.

How often should I change my toothbrush?
Most people don't change their toothbrush often enough! Toothbrushes should always be changed before the bristles fray - or at least at the first signs of fraying. Old, frayed bristles are ineffective and can harbour bacteria. Most dentists recommend that you change your toothbrush every 2-3 months. Children may need a new toothbrush more often, as they tend to get frayed more quickly.

Oak Lodge stock a large range of toothbrushes, including electric ones. Ask your dentist which brush would be best for you.

What is tooth whitening?
Tooth whitening is an effective way of lightening the colour of your teeth, without damaging the teeth in any way.

At Oak Lodge, we offer home whitening. We will provide you with a custom made, accurately fitting mouth guard made out of thin plastic, as well as a supply of whitening gel. You can then choose when and how regularly you would like to whiten your teeth. You get results from the first application and you can top up whenever you chose.

What can I do to help me relax during treatment?
It is important to tell us if you are nervous about your visit to us. In addition, there are several steps towards feeling more relaxed during treatment:

  • Whenever possible, book your appointment at a time of day when you feel at your best, and when you do not have any other commitments to worry about.
  • Allow plenty of time for your appointment - arriving in a rush, or having to rush off afterwards may make you feel more nervous.
  • Music is played in each of our surgeries. We are always happy to increase the volume a little if you would like to focus on the music during your treatment.

Can I ask the dentist to stop during treatment if I need to?
Yes, you can just tell us, or raise your hand if you feel you need a break during treatment. You will then be given as long as you need before the dentist resumes treatment.

How can I minimise the amount of treatment I will need in the future?
Your dentist and hygienist will work closely with you to help you establish and maintain a thorough oral health programme. With regular visits to the dentist and hygienist, and with good diet and oral hygiene at home, you will have a brighter, healthier smile.

What can a hygienist do for me?
More teeth are lost through gum disease than dental decay. Our Hygienists are well qualified and experienced, and together with the Dentist can identify any problems in your mouth and show you how to deal with them.

During the 30 minute appointment your Hygienist will remove any plaque and tartar (the substances that cause gum disease) from your teeth, removing staining caused by tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, and offer advice on oral hygiene. After your appointment your mouth will be cleaner and healthier, leaving you with fresh breath and a confident smile. Many of our patients choose to see their Hygienist on a regular basis to ensure that their teeth and gums are kept healthy, clean and fresh.

Your Hygienist can also give you advice on diet and nutrition, check your brushing technique and help to keep your teeth and smile fresh and healthy for a life time.

Will it hurt?
Modern techniques in dentistry have resulted in more comfortable treatment for all of us. While we can never promise that your treatment will be completely painless, we will do our utmost to ensure that treatment is as pain-free as possible.
